Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine demetlanmasıyla oluşan güdük polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Taban fark peptitlerin güdük, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, öteki amino asite kadimî, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle demetlanır. Polipeptid örgüsına yeğinlan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid demetlarıyla demetlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine yeğinlan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öteki ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
